Sarah Maria Tyler was the daughter of Noah Tyler and Abigail "Nabby" Barber Tyler. She was one of four daughters who converted to the Roman Catholic Church from the Episcopal Church and joined Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph. She entered in 1827 and became Sister Mary DeSales. She served first as a teacher in Albany where she became sister servant (mother superior). She later became a nurse and hospital administrator in Detroit and Dearborn.
