Biographical Text

Edgar Wadhams was born into a Presbyterian family but converted to the Episcopal Church and studied at the General Theological Seminary. After being ordained deacon in 1844, he and Clarence Walworth began an experimental and unsuccessful monastic community at Wadhams Mills, New York. He became a Catholic in 1845, and later became the first bishop of the Diocese of Ogedensburg.
