Biographical Text

General David S. Stanley served as a cavalry officer during the civil war. Under the influence of Rosecrans and Catholic chaplains, he converted to Catholicism in 1862. He was the special patron of Father Peter Paul Cooney after Rosecrans was dismissed, and was allegedly saved from death by his scapular at the Battle of Franklin. He continued to serve in the army for the rest of his life and made no earnest effort to convert his wife or children.

Biographical Quotation

"A short time ago I baptized and gave his first Communion to the Major General commanding our division. He is now a most fervent Catholic and his example is powerful over the men of his command. I have every assistance from him in anything that I require for discharge of my duties. He is extremely kind to me."-Father Peter Paul Cooney, April 26, 1864
