Benjamin Abbott converted to Methodism after a series of dreams and a vision in which the Lord told him, "You must join the Methodists, for they are my people, and they are right." Following his conversion, he became a popular preacher, receiving ordination as a deacon in 1790 and an elder in the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1793.
